We have been talking about it for years, but we are probably at the point of no return: the great Amazon Rainforest, the green lung of South America and the whole world, almost 5 percent of the world’s surface, is progressively disappearing, due to man. That’s right: the anthropogenic weight is destroying this enormous ecosystem inhabited by tens of thousands of animal and plant species.

There are many causes: first of all, deforestation, i.e. the indiscriminate cutting of trees, especially due to the demand for wood from Europe. Due to deforestation, larger and larger portions of the Amazon rainforest are being destroyed every year. Woods, especially precious ones such as ipé and other tropical woods, are increasingly in demand and often procured illegally. As also documented by Greenpeace, “primary forest is cut down and degraded, paving the way for further exploitation activities such as livestock farming and extensive farming. Illegal logging is also the cause of social conflicts, characterized by phenomena of slave labor and acts of violence against those who oppose it”

Studies carried out by many associations agree that the Amazon, in the last 50 years, has lost more than a fifth of its entire surface. We are talking about an area slightly smaller than Greece, some argue even more. A wild deforestation that in recent years is even growing, as if there were not already a huge environmental and climate problem in the world. Linked to deforestation, there is the problem of animal species that disappear and indigenous tribes forced to leave their villages.

Fortunately, in the last period, it seems that action is being taken to curb this drift, and even in our country something is moving. In Italy, a decree was passed on 10 December 2014, no. 178 which contains rules on the trade, import and use of certified timber in the Italian construction landscape, thus trying to align itself with other European countries on the issue of illegal construction timber.

Eurocorporation, in order to contribute in its own small way to making the Earth greener, collaborates with Treedom in the implementation of agroforestry projects, planting trees in different parts of the world.
